Contractor Privacy Policy
WaterTrust ("we", "us", "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy sets out how we collect, use, share and protect personal information relating to contractors who register with, are vetted by, or buy leads through watertrust.co.uk. It is written under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
The data controller is WaterTrust. You can contact us at support@watertrust.co.uk.
What we collect
Information you give us. When you apply, register, are vetted, or buy leads, you may give us:
- your name and the name of your business
- your email address and phone number
- your business details, including VAT number and company registration number where you hold them
- evidence used to vet you, including public liability insurance details and your water-industry accreditation (for example WIAPS or WaterSafe)
- the regions you choose to work in
- payment information needed to top up your account and buy leads (card payments are handled by our payment provider, Stripe — see "Who we share it with")
- any messages you send us, for example when you report a problem or report a bad lead
Information we collect automatically. When you use the site we collect basic technical information needed to operate it securely, such as your login session and the IP address used to connect, together with records of your account activity such as leads you have viewed and purchased.
Information from other sources. As part of vetting, we may review information about your business that is publicly available, such as your public Google reviews and your public accreditation or insurance status, to decide whether to approve you.
How we use your information, and our legal basis
We use your information to:
- assess and vet your application, and decide whether to approve you
- operate your account, show you available leads, and process your lead purchases and account top-ups
- run the lead marketplace, including enforcing purchase limits and handling bad-lead reports and credit refunds
- keep the site secure and prevent fraud and misuse
- meet our legal and tax obligations
- contact you about your account, your purchases, and changes to the service
- send you notifications about new leads, which are part of the service you sign up for
Our legal bases are:
- performance of our contract with you, to provide the lead service and operate your account
- our legitimate interests, to run, secure and improve the marketplace and to vet contractors so that customers are matched only with approved businesses
- compliance with legal obligations, such as tax reporting and fraud prevention
We do not use your information for third-party advertising, and we do not sell your information.
Who we share it with
We use a small number of trusted providers to run the service, who process data on our behalf under contract and only to provide their service to us:
- our website hosting and database provider, which stores your account and lead data
- Stripe, our payment provider, which processes your card payments and account top-ups securely; WaterTrust does not store your full card details
- our email provider, which delivers account and lead-notification emails
When you buy a lead, the customer's details are released to you so you can contact them about their job. Your own business contact details are not published to customers through the site.
We may also disclose your information where we are required to by law, or in connection with the sale or transfer of the WaterTrust business, in which case your information would be one of the transferred assets.
Cookies
WaterTrust uses only the cookies that are strictly necessary to make the site work, including those that keep you logged in to your account. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, and we do not allow third parties to track you through our site.
Where your information is stored
Your information is stored using our hosting, database and payment providers. Your information may be processed by, or on behalf of, a WaterTrust entity or a supplier located outside the UK and the European Economic Area, including in connection with payment processing and support. Where information is transferred outside the UK, we take the steps required by law to make sure it remains protected to UK standards.
The transmission of information over the internet is never completely secure. We use appropriate measures to protect your information, but we cannot guarantee the security of data sent to the site, and any transmission is at your own risk. You are responsible for keeping your account password confidential and not sharing it with anyone.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while you hold an account with us and while we provide the service to you. After our relationship ends, we keep your information only for as long as is necessary and proportionate — for example, to meet our legal and tax obligations and to deal with any dispute — and then delete it.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- ask us to correct information that is wrong
- ask us to delete your information in certain circumstances
- ask us to restrict or object to how we use your information
- object to processing carried out for our legitimate interests
- object to decisions made solely by automated means that significantly affect you
- receive your information in a portable format in certain circumstances
You can review and update much of your information from within your WaterTrust account. To exercise any of your rights, contact us at support@watertrust.co.uk. There is no charge for making a request. We may ask you to confirm your identity before we act, to protect your information.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
